In 2009, in the midst of the Great Recession, I found myself upside-down on a condo I had purchased just months before, having gotten orders to move to the other side of the world, and trying to avoid filing bankruptcy, which would likely mean the loss of my security clearance and potentially the end of my military career. I was stressed and anxious and willing to do almost anything to keep my head above water.
After confiding in a friend, we decided we wanted more control over our finances and needed to learn about personal finance. We spent the next year reading personal finance books and teaching ourselves about budgeting and investing. That knowledge and the habits we built not only kept me out of bankruptcy, but also laid a foundation for opportunities I otherwise would not have had.
As I traveled across the U.S. and around the world, I saw the lack of financial education and the uncertainty, fear, and costly mistakes that came with it.
With more than two decades of experience across the U.S. Air Force, non-profits, Goldman Sachs, and J.P. Morgan Chase, I know the power of financial education and I want to help others confidently take control of their finances.
I founded Danmardea LLC to promote financial education, empowerment, and community.
